“Experts on healthcare safety say nonverbal body language known as “behaviors of concern” can precede actual violence, and if caught early, de-escalation tactics can be used to intervene and keep the situation from becoming violent.”

Healthcare Security Services

Hospitals, medical clinics and other healthcare facilities are high on the list of locations where violence is likely to occur. According to studies conducted by OSHA* and other research organizations, healthcare and social service workers face an increased risk of work-related assaults resulting primarily from violent behavior of patients, clients and/or residents. High-profile cases have made headlines in recent months which highlight a reality that violence in and around hospitals and other healthcare facilities is not unusual and are on the increase.

While no specific diagnosis or type of patient predicts future violence, epidemiological studies consistently demonstrate that inpatient and acute psychiatric services, geriatric long-term care settings, emergency departments and residential and day social services present the highest risk of violent behavior. Pain, devastating prognoses, unfamiliar surroundings, mind- and mood-altering medications and drugs, and disease progression can also cause agitation and violent behaviors.

Emergency Management Planning

  • Emergency Management training helps you to be prepared and avoid reactive responses. Fear, anxiety and missteps can be significantly reduced when your staff routinely addresses emergency procedures.

Active Shooter Training

  • According to the FBI, in 63 incidents where the duration of the incident could be ascertained, 44 (69.8%) of 63 incidents ended in 5 minutes or less, with 23 ending in 2 minutes or less. The Department of Homeland Security reports the average Law Enforcement response time to an active shooter event is 18 minutes. Even when law enforcement was present or able to respond within a few minutes, doctors/nurses/staff often had to make life and death decisions. Active Shooter training is critical and medical staff/personnel alike need to engage in training on active shooter scenarios.
